MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State students get hands-on learning experiences while working for The Daily in the Unified Media Lab (UML).
The Daily is home to multiple student-led media organizations NewsLink Indiana, The Daily News, Byte and Ball Bearings. These organizations help students gain experience and action while working in a real field of journalism and media production.
Over the years, the students here have won multiple awards, have traveled across countries, and have impacted the local area around them.
One attendee, Olivia Ground, the digital managing editor for the Daily News, explained just how valuable her time with the organization has been.
“The Daily News has been the most critical part of my educational experience so far,” Ground said. “The classes are great at Ball State, and I don’t regret any of the classes. I have learned a lot in them.”
With room to learn and grow, the UML also provides different opportunities and different careers for students to go into. UML director Corey Ohlenkamp expressed his appreciation for the students in the UML.
“In my short time here, I have come to appreciate the ingenuity of the students,” Ohlenkamp said. “There is a lot of students here that are tackled with different problems every day, whether that is balancing the workload with extracurricular work down here in the lab, or their classes, or trying to find a story that they are really passionate about.”
The UML has repeatedly given the opportunities for students to boost their careers. They are recognized as achievers, and deliver with satisfaction.
