After practicing behind closed doors throughout the early spring, Ball State football is ready to give the Muncie community and fanbase a glimpse of its progress in the Cardinals' spring showcase at Scheumann Stadium Saturday, April 12.

“I want to see another good practice,” Ball State head coach Mike Uremovich said. “It’s a good opportunity to see if our guys can handle [spectators watching].”

Per Ball State Athletics, the event will start at 1 p.m. and run for two hours. The session will feature 11-on-11 play amongst other situational scrimmages. Though this will be the Cardinals’ first time playing in front of an audience, it will be Uremovich’s first time coaching in front of the community since being hired Dec. 4, 2024.

“As a coach, your approach is the same between the first practice and the last game of the year,” Uremovich said. “I’m excited for the community to come see our players.”

Multiple returning Cardinals have a similar mindset going into the event.

“I just want to see everyone compete,” redshirt senior quarterback Kiael Kelly said. “Everyone is family out here, and we want to show the fans what our team has to offer going into next year.”

Kelly, who returned to Ball State after opting into the transfer portal last fall, said he’s excited to perform in front of the fans. In his time with the Cardinals, he’s thrown for 608 passing yards and has two touchdown passes. On the ground, he has 898 rushing yards and eight touchdowns.

This spring, Ball State had 25 new players — 15 transfers and 10 high school signees — join the team. Uremovich said the roster has shown positive signs in their 15 spring practices.

“Guys have worked hard and they’ve done everything we’ve asked of them,” he said.

Per Ball State Athletics, the two quarterbacks receiving the most snaps will be Kelly and redshirt junior transfer Walter Taylor III. Taylor spent last season with Colorado and was with Vanderbilt before that. While he didn’t see the field with the Buffaloes, the lefty quarterback appeared in five games with the Commodores, completing five passes for 44 yards and a touchdown.

Though Ball State has multiple veteran players taking the field for the showcase, some younger Cardinals will also have an opportunity to show off their talents.

“I just want to have some fun,” redshirt sophomore wide receiver R.J. Mukes III said. “This is the last hoorah before we go on [summer] break, and we want to continue what we’ve been doing [in practice].
