YWCA creates program to aid homeless

Homelessness is something that can affect anyone. YWCA of Central Indiana has created their 45-Day Stay Program to help.

MUNCIE, Ind. — Homelessness can affect anyone. Its impact can cause people to feel like they have nothing, so the YWCA of Central Indiana has created its 45-Day Stay Program.

The 45-Day Stay program is a way for the YWCA to give back to their community and to give people a fresh start.  Corrine Russell, the program coordinator, at the YWCA of Central Indiana explained the program and their goals for the program.

“Our main goal will be to find them permanent housing. Becoming homeless is something that can affect anybody at any time. So at least as long as they choose to reside here, we want to make sure that we support them in recouping the tools they need to live sustainably,” said Russell.

Russell also explained that the program doesn't just offer shelter but it gives them an opportunity to connect with the community as well.  The community is more than willing to help the shelter in giving their tenants a chance to financial literacy and nutrition on a budget. The shelter partners with different agencies within the community to offer free services during their stay.

When individuals come to the shelter, they aren’t just given a bed but they are also receiving resources and compassion. The shelter is also willing to be flexible with the 45-day time limit and is willing to work with anyone who is looking for a job or looking for a home while staying at their shelter.

“We want to do all they can to get settled in here in Muncie or we have from places like Ball State or Open Door, Aspire, and the relationships that we have with places like Muncie housing authority as well as helping them kind of grow their roots down here,” said Russell.

The shelter continues to be a beacon of hope due to the support it has had from the local community.  If you or someone you know is battling homelessness, please contact Corrine Russell at @ywcacennin.org for help.
