MUNCIE, Ind. — Students who are interested in the Spanish language have an opportunity to showcase their singing talent. Ball State’s Spanish Club will host a karaoke night inside the North Quadrangle building tomorrow night.
The Spanish Club is a language and culture club where students can practice their Spanish and learn about different Spanish countries and cultures.
Originally from Honduras, senior lecturer of spanish, Nidia Flis, says the club has given her a chance to learn new things.
“Spanish is my native language,” Flis said. “And even in the club, I learned so many things because we talk about Latin America, Spain and other countries, so we talk about all those things.”
English is the dominant language in America, with Spanish being second. Flis says learning other languages, including Spanish, is important when out in the career field.
“You are able to navigate things in a better way,” Flis said. “For your career, if you speak another language, it opens up more opportunities for you, and as someone said, the more languages you speak, the more doors open for you.”
For the event in particular, students are able to learn more about the Spanish language through the mode of music. Spanish Club president Miguel Angel Ortega says the event is open to all students who want to say something.
“Some people have been preparing for a while,” Ortega said, “but if anyone wants to come in and just sing something from the heart–the ‘corazón’--and sing a Spanish song, whether it is popular or the cover of an English-speaking song.”
The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and runs until 7:30 p.m. in room NQ 142. Visit the Spanish Club anytime for more event details in NQ 178.
