The Ball State Daily News sports section and one member of the NewsLink Indiana sports team made the trip to Waco, Texas to cover Ball State women’s basketball in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament first round.

The day started off EARLY. The plane lifted off at 5 a.m., so the crew met at the airport at 3:30 a.m. Although that is when the group met, each had been up at 1 a.m.

A few hours after taking off and landing in Dallas-Fort Worth, we waited in our terminal for our final flight to Waco. After some Starbucks and Whataburger (at 6 a.m., yeah, Whataburger at 6 a.m.) and a delay, we finally departed for Waco.

After landing and getting our bags we took a 15-minute Uber drive with a Waco native. She told us about how she grew up, her favorite local restaurants and too many stories to count in only 15 minutes. It was awesome.

We headed to In-n-Out for lunch where three of the four traveling had it for the first time. The reviews were mixed.

We then walked Baylor’s campus, and it was very unique. The brick buildings with large low-hanging trees set a scene that you rarely find in Indiana.

The crew checked into the hotel and headed to Foster Pavilion, where the tournament is being hosted for the first two rounds. We attended Ball State’s open media and watched practice before heading back to edit, write and publish our content from the media day.

After finishing work, we headed to Terry Black’s Barbecue. Although it was pricey, it was well worth the cost. The sides included slaw, potato salad, beans, green beans, and more. They also had brisket and turkey, but the four decided to go with brisket.

After a long day of travel and work, the team finally retired to the hotel at 9:30, a very very very, long day of work. But we are all incredibly thankful for the opportunity we have to cover a team at this stage and never take it for granted.
