Greek Week holds battleship competition

Ball State fraternities and sororities compete in Greek Week events all week long.

MUNCIE, Ind.— Lewellen Aquatic Center is typically home to Ball State University Swimming and Diving, but that changed on Tuesday. Ball State Greek Life filled the bleachers to cheer on their peers in a Battleship Event.

The event is the first competition in Greek Week, a week-long competition for bragging rights and a trophy for the team with the most points. Teams earn points based on their performances throughout the week in various competitions. Six hundred points were available during the Battleship Event.

Greek Week Battleship is far from the board game version, leaving the red and white pegs at the dinner table. The event was an all-out war.

“The whole purpose of the game is to sink the opponent’s ship,” said associate director of student life, Zachariah Brumfield. “Students are given squirt guns, buckets, and yoga mats to either block the water or throw the water.”

The event was held as a tournament with two teams competing against each other at a time. The teams were made up of four members of partner fraternities and sororities.

While Greek Week is full of fun and games, it serves a higher purpose. The event also has a week-long donation drive that serves A Better Way in Muncie. A Better Way provides shelter and other services to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

“We are collecting items to basically help get them up and running,” Brumfield said. “Anything from baby diapers and baby wipes to shower curtains or kitchen utensils.”

Throughout the week, anyone can bring donations to the Fraternity and Sorority Life office in L.A. Pittenger Student Center, room 133. Each donation will be worth points that can be pledged to any of the Greek partnerships and add points to their week-long total.
