Ball State softball faced off against Mid-American Conference (MAC) opponent Bowling Green (11-19, 4-3 MAC) at the Falcon’s home field in Bowling Green, Ohio. Although the Falcons were on a five-game win streak, the Cardinals (21-8, 6-2 MAC) got the better of them as Ball State took home the series 2-0.
Friday
The Cardinals and Falcons were set to face off at 4 p.m. on Friday, but due to inclement weather, the first game of the series was canceled.
Saturday
After game one was canceled, the two MAC teams prepared for a Saturday doubleheader where junior Ella Whitney (12-2) got the start for the Cardinals in game two.
As neither team got across home plate in the first inning, Ball State scored three runs in the top of the second, thanks to a two-run shot by junior Hayley Urban followed by a solo homer from senior Mckayla Timmons.
As the fifth inning came around, the scoreboard stayed put until Whitney extended the lead for Ball State following her three-run shot to left-center. At the end of the fifth, the Cardinals led 6-1.
Just a few innings later in the seventh, the Cardinals poured on more scores as Whitney doubled to right center field, driving in two runs before senior Kaitlyn Gibson, Urban, Timmons, and junior McKenna Mulholland all scored RBIs to lift the Cards out to a 14-1 lead heading into the bottom of the last inning.
The Falcons of Bowling Green were able to add on four runs in the bottom of the seventh but that wasn’t enough to bring them back, Ball State took game two 14-5.
Freshman Breanna Severino got the start in the circle for the Cardinals in their final game against Bowling Green.
Unlike game two, the first inning had plenty of action as senior Kara Gunter got the scoring started for the Cardinals when she singled to center field, driving in three runs before she scored on a wild pitch near the end of the inning. Ball State led 4-1 at the end of the opening inning.
As the second rolled around, Gunter got the scoring started yet again when she singled to left field and drove in two additional runs. The Falcons answered in the bottom of the second as the inning ended 6-1 with the Cardinals still on top.
The third and fourth innings had action as well. It started with Urban’s single to left field driving in two more runs in the third, followed by another single from Gunter, which allowed one more run to score. After Gunter’s RBI, Gibson flew out to left center but drove in a run for Ball State. They led 10-3 at the end of the fourth.
Bowling Green answered with one run in the fifth but that was the last run for either team on the day. Ball State took the game 10-4 and the weekend series 2-0.
The Cardinals head back to Muncie and host Northern Illinois Tuesday, April 1. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
