WASHINGTON — On Tuesday, President Donald Trump stated that he wants the U.S. to take control of the Gaza Strip and rebuild it once Palestinians are relocated elsewhere.
"We will take ownership and be accountable for removing all hazardous unexploded bombs and weapons from the area," Trump said during a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
He also mentioned that the U.S. would demolish the ruined buildings and "create economic development that will provide limitless job opportunities and housing for the people in the region." These remarks followed Trump's earlier suggestion that displaced Palestinians in Gaza be "permanently" resettled outside of the conflict-ridden region.
