In 1981, the Ball State Daily News Sports Section created a section in the print newspaper that reviewed weekly sports scores and updates from Ball State athletics. Before the semester break, the sports editors came together and decided to bring the weekly rendition back. But now, it will be a weekly online update.


Jan. 26

Gymnastics beats Western Michigan and Wilberforce

On Squishmallow Day at Worthen Arena, Ball State gymnastics won a tri-meet it hosted. The Cardinals scored 195.500 behind multiple winning performances. Junior Zoe Middleton took the floor title and the all-around championship. She scored 9.850 on the floor and 38.925 on the all-around. Sophomore Lindsay Fuller scored a 9.875 en route to a beam victory. Sophomore Ashley Szymanski won on the bars with a 9.875.

Jan. 28

Men’s basketball loses to Western Michigan

The Cardinals dropped a home Mid-American Conference (MAC) contest to Western Michigan 74-71. Senior center Payton Sparks scored 19 points and had 17 rebounds for a double-double. Junior guard Jermahri Hill scored 19 points and fellow junior guard Juanse Gorosito scored 10 with two shots falling from deep. Sparks also had three blocks, an assist and a steal.

Jan. 29

Women’s basketball beats Ohio on the road

The top team in the MAC continued its success and dominated Ohio 83-61. The Cardinals have not lost since Dec. 10 at Ohio State. They returned to the Buckeye State and dominated the Bobcats, raining down threes at nearly 50 percent. Seniors Ally Becki and Marie Kiefer both had double-doubles and senior Madelyn Bischoff hit five three-pointers. Becki had 23 points, Kiefer had 10 and 16 rebounds, Bischoff had 15 and freshman Grace Kingery had 12 on four shots falling from deep.

Jan. 30

No. 8 men’s volleyball sweeps Tusculum (25-12, 25-19, 25-22)

The Cardinals recorded 39 kills and hit an impressive .351 from the floor en route to the sweep. Junior Patrick Rogers totaled 10 kills and five aces. Sophomore Lucas Machado had 30 assists and five digs.

Jan. 31

No. 8 men’s volleyball completes two-game sweep of Tusculum (25-14, 25-20, 25-18)

Freshman Ryan Louis led the charge for the second straight win over Tusculum. Louis hit .667 and had 11 kills. Sophomore Vanis Buckholz had six kills and five blocks to aid the efforts. Multiple freshmen and sophomores were in the rotation as the young Cardinals got some in-game experience to prepare for the gauntlet they face in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association slate.

Feb. 1

Women’s basketball beats Western Michigan 61-51

Alumni Day for Ball State women’s basketball got off to a shaky start. The Cardinals trailed 10-8 at the end of the first period, but that quickly changed. Senior Alex Richard scored 19 second-half points, totaling 23, to propel the Cardinals to a win. Senior Ally Becki scored 17 to aid the efforts. The Cardinals have now won 12 straight games and stand atop the MAC at 10-0.

Men’s tennis beats Dayton 5-2

The Cardinals topped the Flyers to improve to 2-2 on the season. No. 1 doubles Mason Tran and Jacks Lancaster won, No. 2 duo of Ian Brady and Andrew Hayward also took home wins. No. 3 single Sajin Smith won along with all but two of the Cardinals’ singles.

Men’s basketball takes a road game from Buffalo

Senior center Payton Sparks had a career night as the Cardinals got a much-needed MAC win against Buffalo 89-76. Sparks had 27 points and the Cardinals scored 30 of the last 37 points of the contest. The Cardinals trailed by as many as 10 but were able to overcome the deficit to bring a win back to Muncie. Redshirt senior Mickey Pearson Jr. had 19 points and junior Jermahri Hill had 18 points.
