MUNCIE, Ind. — Habitat for Humanity thrives on partnership, and for the local community, even small partnerships can change lives.

The organization works to provide sustainable and affordable housing for families in need. But their assistance extends beyond just housing; they offer financial classes and help current homeowners maintain their homes and financial stability.

People from all walks of life come together to support the mission, which aims to address the growing shortage of affordable housing. According to the World Green Building Council, 80% of cities worldwide lack affordable housing options.

Kristin Freehill, director of engagement, recalls the story of Brandy, a woman who transitioned from homeowner to employee.

“She was very nervous talking to other people, nervous swinging a hammer, nervous even being on the construction site,” Freehill said.

Brandy was chosen to be a partner in a memorial build honoring a board member who had passed away. She had been struggling in life and turned to Habitat for Humanity of Muncie for help.

“She completed her sweat equity hours quicker than almost any other family. Once she got in there, she knocked it out,” Freehill added.

Sweat equity hours are required of families selected for Habitat’s program. Each family must complete 250 hours, which helps them feel more like partners in the process.

“This organization is not a handout, it’s a hand-up,” Freehill said.

Lindsey Arthur, Habitat for Humanity’s CEO, emphasized the impact these efforts have on families.

“They feel like life has been hard or that people don’t care. When they come to a worksite and see people from all across the community working on their house, it really helps them believe there’s good in this world and that there are people who care,” Arthur said.

Habitat for Humanity continues to make a difference in the Muncie community. The organization is celebrating its 300th family next month and is hosting a major fundraiser in April.
