WINCHESTER, Ind. – There are often different forms of being a part of the community in towns and cities, and Winchester is finding its way with the recent start of a support group. Taz Miller, a Winchester resident, took the initiative in creating and organizing the group.
Miller reflected on his feelings towards not having a social group in Winchester that was accepting of all kinds of needs.
“All the places that I’ve been, since I got sober, they all have this really big recovery/support community [...] and I came back here and it’s like there’s nothing and it’s kinda sad,” said Miller.
Miller has had experiences with addiction from his. He was looking forward to creating a group in his community that could help those who might have/be going through what he has experienced himself.
One of the attendees, Christina Leddy Benedict, shared her feelings about the new support group opportunity. She appreciates Miller’s drive for inclusion and acceptance of all.
“A lot of recovery meetings, they typically sway between like NA [narcotics anonymous], or AA [alcoholics anonymous], or 12 step programs, or faith-based; and to see something where all pathways and backgrounds are accepted—I really like that,” Benedict said.
Along with her, others in the group share the love and appreciation of a community striving for acceptance.
The meetings are only the start as the group plans to host more events, as well as, enjoy meals together in the future.
If you are interested in finding a support group with open, welcoming arms, meetings are held from 6 p.m.-7 p.m. at The First Presbyterian Church in Winchester, Indiana. All are welcome and all are accepted with love.
