BSU’s Feminist For Action new initiative

Right by Ball State’s campus a new self-defense workshop is making waves in the Muncie Community.

MUNCIE, Ind. Right by Ball State’s campus a new self-defense workshop is making waves in the Muncie Community.

In the Muncie Liberation Studio, a space has been created by the BSU, Feminists for Action, to learn strength in seconds.

The workshop was founded by Joseph Souza and Micah Peck, both of whom are involved in Ball State’s Feminists for Action Club. They saw the need for a more accessible self-defense program in the community and decided to take action.
“We had two groups reach out to us, almost back to back, trying to plan a self-defense class here. It showed me there is very much an interest in this,” event coordinator, Joseph Souza stated.

In the studio, participants learn not only physical techniques but also how to develop the mindset and situational awareness needed to de-escalate dangerous situations.

Micah Peck, Vice President of the club, emphasized the importance of an approach to promote safety, especially on a college campus.

“We’ve done book readings, presentations, consciousness-raising groups, where we just talk, share, and spread awareness,” Peck explained.

The workshop also featured Jared Loper from the Academic Grappling Gym, who teaches grappling and jiu-jitsu techniques, which focus on leverage and techniques to defend oneself effectively.

‘By building networks with others, we’re able to bring great people into this space for events that are happening,” Souza said.

The self-defense workshop offers peace of mind, a sense of security and a way for Muncie residents to feel empowered to stand up for themselves.
