The Ball State Symphony Orchestra (BSSO), and choirs took the stage for a collaborative performance at Sursa Performance Hall Feb. 27.

Gregory Robbins, associate professor of music at Ball State led BSSO while Andrew Crow,  Ball State’s director of choral activities, was in charge of the choirs.

Lexi Vidito, a first-year vocal music education major, said a concert takes ample preparation. “We always do a set of warm-ups that normally intertwine with the repertoire we’re doing, so it’s not really a specific set, but it is always a set,” Vidito said.

Crow said each piece for the concert was thoughtfully chosen.

“When we are working toward a significant collaboration I try to give the students a vision for the completed project from the very beginning so that they can be patient and diligent through the whole process," he said.

Following intermission, the choirs and BSSO worked together to play a song called “Chichester Psalms,” divided into three movements. The song was the finale of the collaborative performance and also BSSO’s last performance of the semester, according to Ball State’s School of Music calendar. Jaden Lewis, a concert attendee,  was “very impressed” with the performance.

“I thought the ensembles played beautifully together. I liked how the orchestra and the choir could play together and have a beautiful sound without overplay. With such a large ensemble, they had a great sound quality,” Lewis said.
