Judge Juan Merchan sentenced US President-elect Donald Trump in his hush money trial on Friday, refraining from imposing any further penalties or jail time on the former president, according to US media reports.

The sentence confirms Trump's status as a convicted criminal just 10 days before his inauguration for a second term as US president.

Trump was found guilty on 34 counts in May last year of illegally concealing $130,000 in hush money payments to a porn actress in order to improve his chances of success in the 2016 presidential election.

Trump's defence team had sought to delay sentencing in the case, but the US Supreme Court rejected the emergency appeal.

Trump is to be sworn in as US president in Washington on January 20.
