Sixty-seven people were killed on Thursday due to a midair collision between an American Airlines helicopter and a U.S. Army helicopter from Kansas. This marks the country’s worst aviation disaster in a generation.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was too soon to speculate and vowed to release a preliminary report within 30 days as the cause of the collision is still uncertain.

Officials have stated that the helicopter flew into its path as the jet was flying from Wichita, Kansas.

At least 28 bodies, including all three soldiers who were on the helicopter, have been pulled from the icy waters of the Potomac River as recovery operations continue.
