YORKTOWN, Ind. –– The Yorktown Tigers Girls’ Golf Team made it to the regional finals of the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) after achieving the lowest score at a sectional since 2014. The Tigers were led all season by junior Grace Turner, who was the only returning golfer and had the responsibility of leading the team.

The Tigers shot a combined score of 351, which was led by freshman Lucy Melton. That score was followed up by junior Grace Turner and freshman Lindsey Matthews, who also turned in scorecards of 89 and 86 on the day.

The Tigers then followed up the next weekend by making an appearance in the regional final a year after accomplishing the same feat in which they a 443 in 2023. This year, the Tigers shot a score of 381, which is 62 strokes lower than the previous year with a much younger team.

With the Tigers losing IHSAA State Finalist Kayleigh Agugliaro from last season, it required more from the whole team to step up late in the season. Agugliaro led the Tigers last season, and the now-Trine University golfer had left the door open for the team to fill her shoes.

The season proved to be more to this team than just young players and low scores — as the team was led by leadership and an uplifting atmosphere.

“Grace's leadership's been great,” Tigers’ Head Coach Nathan McClung said.

Turner was the team captain, a title given to her by McClung as she was the returning player with the most experience from the previous year’s regional team.

“She's been a great leader for us all year too because we're super, super young. So, you know, we look to her as a junior for leadership, and then pretty much everybody else on our team is a freshman or sophomore, so she's done a lot of really good things for us,” McClung said.
