Happy Gilmore turns heads with Ball State men’s golf

Happy Gilmore speaks about his time on the Ball State golf team.

MUNCIE, Ind. — The Ball State men’s golf team has been turning heads since last year, but one golfer in particular has been in the limelight. Freshman Happy Gilmore has been turning heads since his commitment to Ball State in June 2023. After dominating high school golf at Bloomington South High School, Gilmore has started his collegiate season with a bang.

After shooting an even-par and tying for third place at the “Put Me In Coach Invitational,” Gilmore looks forward to continuing his season with the cards.

“There is definitely some obvious pressure just because you are playing and representing the school,” said Gilmore.

Gilmore isn’t just known for his iconic name; he is also known for his incredible golf skills. Head coach Mike Fleck had this to say about Gilmore.

“He’s a good player,” said Fleck. “I wouldn’t have recruited him if I hadn’t thought that he could come in and be a really good player within the framework of our program.”

Gilmore is no stranger to the spotlight, however. After his commitment to Ball State, he was shouted out by Adam Sandler, who played the titular character in the movie Happy Gilmore.

“It was unexpected, and it was really cool,” stated Gilmore. The timing of it was a bit odd because I had just gotten back from a golf tournament. It didn’t sink in for a couple of days, but it was a really cool feeling after it did.”

Gilmore and the cards will travel to the Bahamas for the White Sand Bahamas Invitational starting on October 25th, where Gilmore hopes to continue his hot start to his college career and live up to his name.
