Ball State’s Student Government Association (SGA) welcomed Director Emma Legg from the Office of Governmental Relations to speak to the senate during its Oct. 16 meeting. Legg talked about her experience advocating at the Indiana State House.

She discussed her role in briefing legislative documents and capital projects.

“Whether this is your only real experience with government, or you plan to have a lifelong career in political advocacy, or just being civically engaged which is also very important, [it's a] helpful introduction about who I am [and] what our office does,” Legg said.

SGA had two new senator applicants in today’s meeting, Frank Diaz Morales and Francis Baldridge.

Frank Diaz Morales is a third-year Ball State student majoring in social work. He wants to bridge the gap between students and administration, fostering welcoming environments throughout the year and advocate for inclusive living and learning environments.

“Administration can be intimidating sometimes and very hard to approach,” Morales said.

He was voted into the senate 31-0 with two abstentions.

The second potential senator, third-year Francis Baldridge and transfer student from Grace College, appiled for an off campus senator seat.

Baldridge’s goals are to try to improve campus safety and make use of the outside study areas. For campus safety, he wants to improve signage on campus, including improved signage for speed limits and parking.

He went on to talk about how he wants to get better knowledge about the bus routes on campus. Baldridge was voted into the senate and approved 29-1 and 4 abstentions.

Following the new senators' inductions, SGA had a budget request from At-Large Caucus chair Savannah Hutchinson regarding a two-day tabling event informing students about Ball State’s Homecoming Week.

She requested $14.98 for this event. $4.99 went to a bag of Jolly Ranchers and $9.99 went to a 75-piece bag of Hershey chocolate. It was approved with 34-0 with 1 abstention.

President Noah Poole, during his executive report, said he and Vice President Brenna Large met with the Vice President of Marketing and Communications for Ball State University, Deedie Dowdle. During that meeting, the pair discussed how the MyBSU app will replace the myBSU website at the end of this semester.

Poole advised the senators to “leverage this app and website to complete some of the SGA platform points that this executive has set up to accomplish”.

He also mentioned that during the homecoming game, SGA will have buses in operation through campus.

Large finalized the date for the organization’s Election Night Watch Party, landing on Nov. 5 from 6 - 10 p.m. in Cardinal Hall.

Chief of Staff Chelsea Murdock said she and Large met with representatives from the university’s Health Promotion and Advocacy center and talked about the Red Zone, sexual assault awareness month and alcohol awareness programing.

Advisor Abby Haworth announced President Geoffrey Mearns’ new open forums for the Destination 2040: Our Flight Path strategic plan will be held once a week until Nov. 12.

With no new or unfinished business the meeting was adjourned. The next meeting open to the public is on Oct. 23 at 3:15 p.m at the L.A Pittenger Student Center.
