Less than 48 hours after the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump, the the Republican National Convention started in Milwaukee.

On day one, Trump announced his vice presidential pick and running mate as JD Vance, the Ohio politician who won the senate seat in 2022. According to his official senate page, Vance was "born and raised" in Middletown, Ohio, is an Iraq War veteran, and graduated from Ohio State University and Yale Law School.

Vance, 39 years old, will be the first millennial on a major party ticket. Vance was notably against Trump during his presidential run in 2016 but has since reversed his opinion in 2021. Regarding the 2020 election, Vance said he wouldn’t have "certified the results immediately" if he had been vice president and said Trump had “a very legitimate grievance," according to the Associated Press.

The convention also marked the first public appearance of Trump since the attempted assassination against him in Butler, Pennsylvania the afternoon of July 14.

Trump walked into the convention hall with a bandage over his right ear as the singer Lee Greewood performed “God Bless the USA,” according to the Associated Press.

Trump was voted as the official presidential nominee of the Republican Party.

Day one of the convention was aimed to be centered around the theme of the economy. However, conversations about unity and transgender individuals were also shared in between conversations on inflation and involvement in foreign trade, according to the Associated Press.

Day two of the convention continues July 16 around the theme of security.
