This European Championships this year have been really good and well received. It has been everything you would want an international tournament to be and more with shocks, great goals and dramatic winners. The tournament production has been met with a lot of gratitude after the large amount of controversies that the World Cup in Qatar came with, which I will discuss later.
Even with the Qatar World Cup being so entertaining and Messi winning the biggest trophy in football, these were some issues that were too bad to overlook.
The Bundesliga is a huge league in the world of soccer and has some of the biggest and best players playing in it. Because of this, the pitches and the stadiums should be top-class. While we have had some evidence as to this being wrong, the overall feeling of this tournament has been a lot better than the World Cup in Qatar, but why?
Human Rights
One of the many issues with Qatar was the stadiums. Qatar is not a footballing nation like Germany is and even with the fantastic matches which made looking to bet on football with Boylesports even more fun, the tournament suffered because of these issues.
Qatar used migrant workers who were security guards and marshals and put them onto building sites with short-term contracts and awful working conditions. The stadiums needed to be built and Qatar used unskilled workers and poor treatment to do it. This issue resulted, sadly, in the deaths of around 6,500 workers over the decade after the tournament was announced.
Ethical Issues
Worker rights were not the only issue that faced Qatar while it hosted the World Cup. The nation itself is behind most of the world and a lot of the biggest nations recognised this issue and made strides to get it fixed. Ironically, one of the teams that spoke out against Qatar was Germany, who made a statement on the pitch against Qatar's treatment of workers and their people in general.
German Stadiums
As I have touched on, Germany is a very football-heavy nation. It is embedded in tier culture so not only are the fans passionate but the nation itself didn't need much work to get ready. The stadiums host some of the biggest games in the world and are filled with personality.
Although aesthetically Qatar may have the edge over Germany, purely because their stadiums were made just for this tournament, they will still never have the history that these German stadiums have.
The German league is one of the biggest in the world and most watched at that. This money and the history means the stadiums just have that edge. However, in the defense of the Qatar stadiums, we have seen some of the German stadiums have issues with some of the heavy rain that has unfortunately happened in this tournament.
The Overall Impact
The main point here is that people can talk about football and the tournament itself without the political issues behind it. I know soccer fans want politics to stay out of football, but every soccer fan knows that the Qatar World Cup was controversial and purely a money-grabbing scheme from FIFA.
I think money being looked at as a priority over the players and even humans in general, is more of an issue than it is being spoken about. Qatar is a country that is very behind the world and some of its main issues were highlighted at this tournament. Now with Germany hosting, we can just talk about football and we can see a country that is like most in the world and be grateful for that.
With the next three major soccer international tournaments being hosted in the UK, the USA and Spain, Morocco and Portugal. It feels like we are past getting countries like Qatar to host these tournaments.
