With every Delaware County girls' basketball team being eliminated from the state tournament, it’s time to look back and see who were some of the standout athletes. Here are my picks for the best and most improved area girls basketball players from the 2023-24 season.
Yorktown
Best: sophomore Lily Sylvester
During the season, Sylvester led the Tigers with 14.5 points per game and became one of the team’s best facilitators for the basketball. She recorded three 20-point games, which included her season high of 27.
Most Improved: sophomore Addy Barnes
As a freshman, Barnes turned in some pretty impressive stats as she averaged 4.4 points per game, 1.7 assists per game, and 2.4 rebounds per game. This year, she upped her numbers to 9.0 points per game, 3.4 assists per game, and 2.7 rebounds per game.
Delta
Best: sophomore Jillian Barr
During the season, Barr became one of the best players in the county as she averaged 15.6 points per game, 10.2 rebounds per game, and 3.8 blocks per game. She also recorded 13 double-doubles and had two triple-doubles.
Most Improved: sophomore Griffyn Knight
Knight improved multiple stat lines as she had 9.8 points per game, 2.0 assists per game, 4.0, and 3.0 steals per game. She also led the Eagles with 4.0 rebounds per game.
Wapahani
Best: sophomore Megan Luce
This season, Luce looked great for the Raiders as she averaged 9.6 points per game, 2.1 assists per game, 3.8 rebounds per game, and 1.7 steals per game. During the 47-30 win over Daleville on Jan. 9, Luce recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Most Improved: sophomore Emily Luce
Luce finished the season with 8.8 points per game, 3.2 rebounds per game, and 2.1 assists per game. She led Wapahani with 2.7 steals per game. During the game against Daleville, she scored 18 points, her highest of the season.
Daleville
Best: senior Isabelle Williams
Throughout the season, Williams proved that she was one of the best players in the area by averaging 12.8 points per game, 6.5 rebounds per game, and 2.1 steals per game. She also recorded five double-doubles.
Most Improved: freshman Olivia Pratcher
In her first year with the Broncos, Pratcher became an important piece for them. She finished the year with 4.9 points per game, 4.6 rebounds per game, and 2.3 steals per game.
Cowan
Best: senior Davelynn Lindsay
During the year, Lindsay became the Blackhawks’ main weapon on both sides of the ball. She recorded 9.8 points per game, 4.7 rebounds per game, 2.7 assists per game, and 2.9 steals per game. Her season high was 19 points in Cowan’s win over Hagerstown on Nov. 30, 2023.
Most Improved: freshman Savannah Hall
Hall became a solid player for the Blackhawks. In her first season, she averaged 4.7 points per game and 5.7 rebounds per game. One of her best performances came on Nov. 30, 2023, when she had a double-double – 12 points and 10 rebounds – as the Cowan defeated Hagerstown. She also had four games where she had 10 rebounds.
Burris
Best: sophomore Sydney Jackson
Jackson did a lot for the Owls this season. She led the blue and white with 11.3 points per game, 2.1 assists per game, and 3.8 steals per game. In the loss against Southern Wells on Nov. 29, 2023, she had one of her best games of the season as she had 14 points and 11 steals for a double-double.
Most Improved: senior Allison Bucar
Bucar averaged 5.9 points per game, 4.6 rebounds per game, and 1.6 steals per game for the Owls. Her season-high points came as she recorded 15 points as Burris fell to University on Dec. 8, 2023.
