Delta senior wrestler Braxton Russell was voted the Daily News Athlete of the Week from the week of 1/31-2/7.
“Our community is amazing and they give all of us endless support,” Russell said, via text. “We always have a lot of people at our matches and tournaments so that helps a lot. They are also giving us constant support on social media and behind the scenes. Having such an amazing support system like that makes a world of difference.”
During that week, Russell came in first place in the 175 pound weight class. His performance helped the Eagles win the IHSAA Regional Championship at Jay County High School.
“We have been doing great because of all of the work we have put in,” Russell said. “This team has been doing off-season wrestling and workouts for as long as I can remember”
The Ball State Daily News will use this program to honor athletes who had an impressive week or a breakout performance. A candidate from each school will be chosen and the community can vote for the winner.
Candidates will be announced every Wednesday with the voting closing on the following Saturday at 5 p.m. If you believe a certain student-athlete should be your school’s candidate, email the Daily News high school sports reporter Zach Carter at zachary.carter@bsu.edu.
To vote for the athletes, check the Daily News Sports account on X.
