Delta senior cross country runner Nicki Southerland is the Daily News Athlete of the Week from the week of 10/11-10/18. She has been voted as the winner for the last two weeks.
“I could not have done it without all the people like my parents who come to all my meets,” Sutherland said. “My brothers come out and support me, grandparents, and my friends and teammates are always there.”
Southerland came in first place at Sectional Nine with the fastest girls’ time (17:31.8) in the state of Indiana. To her, being successful is all about hard work.
“Getting in the right training with speed work and long runs and things like the weight room and your core [are important],” she said.
Delta athletic director Tilmon Clark believes that she never stops working.
“Nicki is an elite runner who continues to perfect her craft,” Clark said via email.” As a senior, you can tell that she has learned from her prior experiences. Her ability to be coachable, humble, and hungry has allowed her to keep having success as a runner.”
The candidates for the week of 10/18-10/25 will be announced later this evening. If you believe a certain student-athlete should be your school’s candidate, email the Daily News high school sports reporter Zach Carter at zachary.carter@bsu.edu.
