MUNCIE, Ind. — This Black History Month, the Ball State University’s Black Student Union (BSA) works to empower black students on campus with their event tomorrow; ‘My Black Hair.’ The event sets out to educate students on how to care for their natural hair.
At the event, Zuri Jackson, Ball State sophomore and event coordinator for the BSA, plans to demonstrate hairstyles on different natural hair textures.
“I will be braiding, twisting, showing different demos on hair,” Jackson said. “We will also be having a presentation about hair overall.”
The BSA hopes to make minorities feel welcomed on campus, specifically the black community. The BSA strives to create a safe place for minorities and black students. ‘My Black Hair’ is only one of many planned events throughout Black History Month that hopes to strengthen both the community and individual identities.
“We wanted everyone to know that we can let you know how to take care of your hair, how to manage and also the best styles to deal with black hair,” Jackson said.
From locs to box braids, relaxed natural; Hair is important to a plethora of people and cultures, and in the black community, a person’s hair may be a creative outlet to express themselves.
“I think that everyone should focus on their hair,” Jackson said. “Mainly because it shows who you are. It shows your personality.”
The ‘My Black Hair’ event will be held in room 121 of the Teacher College tomorrow Feb 9th, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
