MUNCIE IN. -- The first Thursday of every month is ‘First Thursday’ an event held by the City of Muncie to help promote local artists.
Many local businesses open up their stores and sidewalks to artists in the community in order to help them get their feet on the ground.
Gordy Fine Art & Framing is using this Thursday to promote a retiree of Ball State University, David Johnson. Johnson retired about a year and a half ago and has since taken a step back and paints for fun.
“It’s one of the best things to do,” Johnson said. “Gordy is the best place for people to get introduced to art if they haven't already.”
Johnson doesn't paint for the money, but you still can buy one of his works on Gordy’s website. Gordy is currently owned and operated by Carl Schafer and his wife, Barbara Schafer. The business was founded by Brian and Genny Gordy in 1989, then bought by the Schafers in 2015. Brian and Genny helped found the ‘First Thursday’ event back in 2003 and have been participating in it every month since.
“It gives galleries a chance to showcase artists in the community,” Carl Schafer said. “For us it gives us a chance to showcase one or two of the artists that we promote”.
