Ball State Women’s Volleyball (18-6, 10-2), the top team in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) West Division, swept the first-place team in the MAC East Division, Bowling Green (14-9, 9-3), to sit atop the MAC undisturbed in first place overall Oct. 28.
The Cardinals never trailed in the first set, emphasized with a kill from third-year middle blocker Lauren Gilliland that extended the Ball State lead to eight.
A block assist by Gilliland and fourth-year outside hitter Natalie Risi put the Falcons down in set one.
Through the first set, Gilliland led the Cardinals on offense with three kills.
In set two, Ball State slipped into a 14-19 deficit late in the set with Bowling Green only five points away from tying the match.
Three kills from fourth-year middle blocker Marie Plitt, a kill from Gilliland, two blocks and two attack errors for the Falcons helped the Cardinals dig out of the deficit and tie up the score at 21-21.
A kill for third-year outside hitter Cait Snyder inched Ball State closer to concluding the sweep and ended the second set.
The third and final set saw the two teams go back and forth, with 14 ties throughout the set.
Despite committing two more errors in the last set than Bowling Green, the Cardinals had seven more kills and a .289 hitting percentage compared to the Falcons’ .200.
Two consecutive kills from Plitt ended the match and Bowling Green’s hopes of a comeback. Plitt and Snyder both had a team-high 10 kills in the win.
Ball State travels to Oxford, Ohio, Saturday for another road match against Miami (OH) at 5 p.m.
