In its first home series of the 2022 season, Ball State Women’s Volleyball (7-1, 0-0) came out victorious in its Friday matches.
Friday opened bright and early for the Cardinals, who swept Arkansas State (5-2, 0-0) in straight sets (25-18, 25-12, 25-22) behind 15 kills apiece for senior middle blocker Marie Plitt and senior opposite Natalie Mitchem.
Mid-American Conference (MAC) West Division Defensive Player of the Week and senior libero Maggie Huber recorded nine digs alongside sophomore setter Megan Wielonski who chipped in nine of her own.
“It’s always exciting [to win the award] but it just pushes me to be better every week,” Huber said. “I want to be better for my team and I want to make plays.”
Wielonski tallied 39 assists in the win over the Red Wolves and 34 assists in the Friday evening four-set (25-21, 21-25, 25-12, 27-25) win over the Alabama Crimson Tide (4-4, 0-0).
Junior outside hitter Cait Snyder raked in 10 kills while Mitchem notched eight kills against the Southeastern Conference (SEC) foe.
Wielonski had 15 digs on the defensive side of the ball and two aces. Junior libero Kate Vinson recorded two aces herself in the win.
Junior middle blocker and MAC West Division Co-Offensive Player of the Week Lauren Gilliand had 10 kills as well over the four sets against Alabama.
“Lauren had a big offensive match [against Alabama]," head coach Kelli Miller Phillips said. "She struggled a little bit this morning and did a nice job tonight."
Ball State heads into tomorrow’s match against Green Bay at 6 p.m. looking to go 3-0 in the Ball State Tournament.
