On Friday afternoon, Ball State University Police Department (BSUPD) sent out a public safety advisory about bike thefts on campus bike racks and in surrounding neighborhoods.

Since Aug. 24, BSUPD has taken nine bike theft reports, Chief of Police Jim Duckham said via email.

Duckham said bike theft is a common problem on university campuses and is not “unique to Ball State.”

The advisory that was sent out provides tips for students to help prevent thefts, such as registering their bikes with BSUPD and securing unattended bikes.

BSUPD recommends using a U bolt-style lock instead of a cable lock.

You can register your bike with BSUPD here.
