MUNCIE, Ind.--- Tina Nguyen and Monet Lindstrand, running for president and vice president of the Student Government Association, secured their spots last Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Nguyen was president last term and has new goals and plans for this term. Nguyen said she hopes to reach out to more organizations about SGA. She wants more people to get involved in student government, so their voices can be heard.
She is most excited to work on a sexual assault prevention plan on campus. Nguyen plans to talk to businesses around the village to get an Angel Shot to keep students safe on campus. An Angel Shot is a code for patrons who many feel unsafe. If so, they can ask a staff member for an Angel Shot, and the worker will respond by helping them find a way to safety.
Additional new plans are being made for members of SGA.
“This year we are doing interviews for cabinet positions and chief of staff, so that is something new we are looking forward to,” said Nguyen.
While this is Nguyen’s second year as president of SGA, this is Lindstrand’s first time as vice president. Lindstrand was president pro tempore the past term, and she said she learned a lot from working closely with the Senate. She hopes to keep those same relationships as vice president. Additionally, Lindstrand, a political science major, hopes to learn skills that she will be able to use in her future. Lindstrand’s goals include expanding on the past vice president’s work. Lindstrand wants to expand dining options with more dietary options for people with restrictions like gluten free, vegetarian or vegan.
Both newly elected members are excited for the upcoming term.
“I was really excited. I’ve loved being in SGA. I joined last year as a freshman, so being a sophomore and being able to take on this role as a junior next year is really cool,” said Lindstrand.
