MUNCIE, Ind.(Newslink) — The city of Muncie and IRONMAN are working on an agreement to hold future events.
In a board works meeting on Wednesday, Muncie Mayor Dan Ridenour announced the plans to secure the agreement. He said without one, IRONMAN has the right to cancel the event at any point.
“Muncie was the only city in all of the IRONMAN events that did not have a signed agreement,” said Ridenour, “IRONMAN could have stopped at any time coming to Muncie and we just didn’t want that to happen.”
Ridenour said the event brings in millions of dollars in revenue for local businesses. According to a city press release from last year, the competition brought Muncie $4.092 million. City officials told NewsLink Indiana that the details of the agreement are still being finalized on IRONMAN’s end and that the city will be releasing a joint statement in the coming weeks.
“This agreement gives us the IRONMAN definitely coming to Muncie in 2022, 2023 and 2024,” said Ridenour.
According to the IRONMAN website , the date for this year’s competition is set for October 1. Ridenour also said that he will be competing in the running portion of the event as part of a relay.
