Ball State finds identity at Louisville Classic

Ball State Women’s Tennis finished it’s fall season this past weekend at the Louisville Classic at the University of Louisville. With Ball State winning more matches than it's lost, they believe the future is bright.

This event was a three-day invitational taking place over Friday Oct. 29, through Sunday Oct. 31.

Head Coach Max Norris spoke on how the team turned around what he called a slow start to the weekend.

“I told them this is a weekend where you can only focus on each match,” Norris said. “When you have a newer team in hidden duals, you really need to know your identity.”

Norris said the team later found their identity and used that to do a great job rebounding on Friday and the weekend in general.

“I think the identity was realizing that this is the same game it’s always been,” Norris said.

On Friday’s slate, The Cardinals fell short in doubles, going for a total of one win and five losses, however they made up for it in singles, earning four wins and only one loss.

Saturday, the doubles team improved, won three matches and lost two. Their singles team stayed hot and won four matches only losing two.

Finally, on Sunday, the doubles team finished for the weekend with a final record of 4-7, but the singles team won three more matches, only losing two, giving them a final record of 11-5 over the three-day span.

Standouts included Jessica Braun (Junior), Amy Kaplan (Junior) and Hanna Davies (Freshman) who all did not lose in singles competition all weekend. Each of these women also won at least one doubles match.

Norris said he was impressed with how these student-athletes stepped up, especially the upperclassmen.

“The upperclassmen didn’t wait around, they just went out and did what they needed to do,” Norris said. “In the past, we haven’t always stepped up when an opposing team makes a comeback, but this weekend it was really cool to see Jessica and Amy step up.”

In total, the Ball State finished their weekend with a record of 15-12. Norris said there will be a couple things to work on between now and the winter/spring season.

"We plan on using these next five weeks to work out one or two technical things, and to let the team grow together,” Norris said.

Ball State Women’s Tennis will be back in action in 2022 at a date yet to be announced.
