After nearly 83 scoreless minutes, the final seven minutes helped give Toledo (8-4-2, 3-3 MAC) a 2-1 win over Ball State (4-7-1, 2-3-1 MAC) Sunday afternoon.
“[I’m] disappointed to play well enough to get a result today and come away with nothing,” head coach Josh Rife said. “For 83 minutes, we played pretty well, but unfortunately, the last seven proved to be costly.”
Ball State took the lead in the 83rd minute, as redshirt senior midfielder Nicky Potts sent a cross shot into the box to senior midfielder Tatiana Mason, who sent the ball into the back of the net.
19 seconds later, Toledo senior midfielder Claire Calahan sent a shot into the goal from almost midfield. In the 87th minute, Toledo freshman midfielder Olivia Dault hit junior forward Stephanie Currie in stride to send the ball past senior goalkeeper Alex DeRuvo, to give the Rockets the victory.
The Cardinals outshot the Rockets 18-10, while both teams totaled eight shots on goal. Toledo sophomore goalkeeper Emma Bourterwick had seven saves, while DeRuvo had five. DeRuvo replaced sophomore goalkeeper Bethany Moser, who suffered an injury 16 minutes into her first career start.
Rife and the Cardinals understand the stakes are high moving forward.
“The objective is pretty clear moving forward,” Rife said. “We need to put together some wins if we want to have a chance to make the conference tournament.”
Ball State hosts Ohio (8-3-1, 4-0-1 MAC) Oct. 14. The match begins at 4 p.m.
