Since its creation in 1977, the Ironman Triathlon has made itself known as one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world, and, this year, it’s making its way to Muncie.

The Ironman Triathlon Series is “the world’s premier full-distance and half-distance triathlon series” and consists of more than 150 qualifying races in more than 50 countries, regions and territories around the world.

On Oct. 2, nearly 3,500 people are expected to participate in the 140.6-mile triathlon through Muncie’s neighborhoods. Participants of the full triathlon event will compete in a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run, raced in that order. Prairie Creek Reservoir will be the site of the swim and run events, while the bike trail will stretch through various parts of rural Indiana.

Mayor Dan Ridenour is one of the participants registered to compete in the half triathlon event of 70.3 miles, composed of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and 13.1-mile run.

The triathlon is limited to between 16 and 17 hours, typically starting at 7 a.m. and ending at midnight. Participants who successfully complete the entire course will become designated Ironmans.

Muncie is one of two communities in the country — and one of eight in the world — that is holding both a full triathlon and half triathlon on the same day. The event is set to bring $14 million in economic value to Muncie, and small businesses throughout the community will be highlighted for people attending the event in hopes of increasing foot traffic after the impact of COVID-19.

Registration for both the full and half events is noon to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30 at the Horizon Convention Center, but those interested can also register online using the official Ironman website, Ironman.com. Registered participants will receive benefits including a backpack, finisher medal and timed race results.
