An annual Homecoming event at Ball State broke away from tradition Friday afternoon. The Bed Races, which have traditionally been held on Riverside Avenue, were instead held at the University Track at Briner Sports Complex to minimize the spread of COVID-19.
Beds at the starting line were sanitized between each race, as fourteen teams on Ball State’s campus competed against each other for the 2021 Bed Race Overall Winner plaque.
Associate Athletics Director of Marketing and Fan Engagement Sean Sullivan described the event as “iconic” as he hosted the race for viewers on the Ball State University Facebook page. He gave credit to this year’s Homecoming Steering Committee for putting on this new celebration.
There were seven awards handed out for different categories: sorority, fraternity, independent female, independent male, best costume and overall winner and runner-up.
In the final race, Phi Kappa Psi defeated Ball State Recreation Team One to win the championship.
