Fall MAC Preview team results

  1. Eastern Michigan +78
  2. Akron +83
  3. Ball State +85
  4. Toledo +90
  5. Western Michigan +97

Despite battling narrow fairways and fast greens, Ball State Women’s Golf seized a top-three finish at the Fall MAC Preview in Ohio.

Coming off of a two week break, the Cardinals were refreshed and ready to take on MAC rivals on Monday. However, the course ended up being more difficult than previously expected.

“They are tough mentally and are experienced enough to recognize that the challenges are facing every other competitor too,” head coach Katherine Mowat said. “The course presented new challenges and we did our best to overcome those challenges.”

This challenge forced the Cardinals to score a 324 team score in the first round on Monday. After examining the course and maintaining composure, a switch flipped in the second round. The Cardinals went on to tally the second lowest round score of the entire tournament.

“The biggest adjustment happened between the first and second rounds,” Mowat said.  “You could see the players settle more into their games. We played smart and had a more confident approach.”

Ball State shaved off 15 strokes to finish with a 309 in the second round. Only Akron and Toledo beat this score with both teams notching a 308. The Cardinals rounded out the tournament with a 316 on Tuesday.

For the first time this season, junior Liz Kim earned the top spot of all the Cardinals who participated. Kim tied for ninth place in a field of 64 golfers.

“Off the tee, I was pretty strong,” Kim said. “I think in round two, I only missed one fairway. I felt great setting up shots for my approach shots.”

After shooting an 80 in the first round, Kim found her groove and put together a 75 in the second round on Monday. On Tuesday morning, Kim scored a 79 to finish the tournament at 18 over par.

“This week was really tough,” Kim said. “Overall, I thought that I fought hard all three rounds but saw a lot of areas in my game that I'll work on improving for next week at Louisville. I had a lot of good swings this week and tried to focus on the positives because of how tough all three rounds felt.”

Another consistent performer for Ball State is senior Manon Tounalom, who finished in 12th place with a 236 three-round score.

Contributing to the Cardinals’ top-three finish were sophomore Hadley Moritz who finished 27 over par, junior Tiegan Taylor who finished 28 over par and sophomore Morgan Lewis at 29 over par.

The Cardinals will tee off only one more time in the fall season at the Cardinal Cup in Kentucky on Oct. 18-20.
