In the first tournament of the fall season, Ball State Women’s Golf placed third overall thanks to two top-10 individual finishes Monday.
On Sunday, the Cardinals hit the links in Normal, Illinois, to take on 16 other schools for the first time this fall. Ball State finished in third place overall with a total score of 891 after the concluding round Monday morning.
Leading the pack for Ball State was senior Manon Tounalom. She notched a 75 and 70 during the first two rounds that took place on Sunday. The final round on Monday morning sealed the deal for Tounalom’s individual placement with a score of 72. She finished tied for third individually with a three-round score of 217. Tounalom’s second round proved to be the best for the Ball State team at 2-under-par.
“[Tounalom] is starting her senior year with three incredible rounds,” head coach Katherine Mowat said. “She played her game of very steady and consistent golf.”
The second-best scorer for the Cardinals was sophomore Hadley Moritz who finished with a score of 220. She scored 73, 73 and 74 over the two days of competition. This performance placed Moritz tied for eighth place individually. Her putting was good enough to propel her to a top-10 finish.
“[Moritz] had a personal goal of finishing in the top 10,” Mowat said. “She played very steady throughout and led the field in par-5 scoring.”
Although this was the first formal tournament of the year, the Cardinals have spent the past few weeks preparing for this moment.
“We were excited to compete after our three weeks at home practicing,” Mowat said. “Overall, we certainly showed our improvements from last year, and we witnessed a lot of great play.”
Also contributing to the Cardinals’ score were sophomore Morgan Lewis with a 227, junior Tiegan Taylor who scored a 228, junior Liz Kim with a 232 and sophomore Dylann Armstrong with a 245 as an individual.
The Cardinals will be back in action Monday as they host the Cardinal Classic in Yorktown, Indiana.
