It’s a crime that can happen in seconds, but the outcome can cost a lifetime of damages.
Angela Lykins, Muncie resident, works out at the YMCA downtown a few times a week, but this is the first time she had an experience such as a car break-in.
“Where they hit is right here, [back window] and it shattered the entire window,“ she said.
She walked back from the YMCA around 3 p.m. and found that her entire back window was busted open. When she looked for her purse and work bag that were hidden under the seat, she noticed they were no longer in the car.
“My heart kinda dropped. I was numbed. I stared,” she said. “They stole my cash, used my credit card, and $1000 that was in my work bag.”
Additionally, the window damage was another $300 cost.
Lykins chose to turn a negative into a positive by raising awareness on Facebook. She explained that she wanted to warn others not to make the same mistake.
“When I did the post it was to point out to everyone to be observant and cautious,” she said.
Linda Cook, Muncie Police Lieutenant, said there are simple things people can do to protect their belongings in a car.
“Make sure you secure your car every night or don’t leave valuables in there,” she said. “If you do leave valuables in the car either hide them or lock them in the trunk or glove box.”
Nevertheless, Lykins stressed she just wants to feel safe leaving her car in a parking lot.
“It is disappointing that in a small town you have to worry about someone shattering your window,” she said.
