MUNCIE, Ind. (NewsLink) - Ball State’s School of Music is hosting a three-day concert series this weekend to show off new types of music.
The 49th Annual Festival of New Music started March 14 with a concert that featured many different artists and composers. All the performers presented new music in different genres. The festival featured work from both musicians and composers to introduce new classical music to the Muncie community.
This year’s event was coordinated by Dr. Chin Ting Chan, an assistant professor of music composition within Ball State's School of Music. When asked what Chan hoped the outcome of the festival was, he said “Just to meet new people, just bringing in some audience that would normally not have the exposure to this kind of music and... stimulating the awareness of new music, new classical music in general.”
The feature artist at this year’s festival was New York based Popebama. Popebama is a duo made up of Erin Rogers, saxophone, and Dennis Sullivan, percussion. The duo uses many different elements of performance, like text, theater, electronics, improvisation and instrumental writing to produce their music and break the boundaries of performance.
"I chose Popebama because they, well they are freelancers in New York City so they will be able to tell students and talk to other students about entrepreneurship and other things, you know, how to be active after you graduate and also they are excellent performers and composers so they can sorta do both ends,” said Dr. Chan.
Popebama and other artists took the stage through March 16.
