Ball State (8-3-2, MAC 4-2-1) faced off against Akron (4-8-3, MAC 1-5-1) on Friday night at Briner Sports Complex.
The match was forced into overtime after neither team was able to find the back of the net. In the 105th minute, freshman defender Kerrigan Johnson scored from outside the box to give the Cardinals the win. The goal was a backheel assist from freshman forward Tatiana Mason.
“A great goal, delighted for her,” head coach Roberts said. “A strike from that distance, and to be that accurate was great to see.”
Before overtime, the Zips faced 11 shots, including five saves from freshman goalkeeper Erin McKinney. The Cardinals continued to apply pressure to the Zips, including senior midfielder Alessandra Fistrovich hitting the crossbar in the 89th minute from outside the box. Senior goalkeeper Tristin Stuteville had two saves.
In overtime, the Cardinals forced three more shots led by senior forward Amanda Shaw and freshman midfielder Sammi Corcoran with one a piece. Then in the 105th minute, play concluded as Johnson found the back of the net.
“It was really exciting,” Johnson said. “We all just tried to work as a team and do what we can to get a goal.”
This is the third conference win in a row for the Cardinals. The Cardinals will continue conference play against Buffalo on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Briner Sports Complex.
