Ball State Women’s Tennis traveled to Chattanooga, Tennessee, for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Ohio Valley Regionals. Junior Rebecca Herrington and senior Sarah Swiderski stood out for the Cardinals.
Thursday, Herrington began her singles play against Sarah Monesmith from Butler. Herrington won her first match (6-0, 6-4) and moved on to the round of 64. In her second round matchup, she faced Kateryna Popova from Lipscomb. Herrington was defeated by Popova (6-4, 6-3). Head coach Max Norris said Herrington has improved a lot as a player.
“I think she still has room to grow in her matches,” Norris said. “I honestly believe, in both of those situations, she can just work on a few more things in those key moments; she can go to the next level.”
Swiderski lost her first round of singles and moved into the consolations of the singles bracket. In the first round of consolations, Swiderski defeated Brianna Tulloch from Kentucky (6-2, 6-2). In her second round, she beat Gabby Schuck from Tennessee (7-5, 7-5). Norris said it was a positive sign seeing Swiderski defeat two women from the Southeastern Conference.
“Both Tulloch and Schuck were both in their respective school's lineups last season,” Norris said. “I was pleased [Swinderski] stuck to her game style. That was very cool for her to do that.”
The Cardinals will be back in action Nov. 2 at the Bronco Challenge in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
