Four Ball State teams were in action this weekend from Missouri to Scheumann Stadium. Here's what you missed.
Thursday
- Ball State football kicked off its 2018 season at home with a win over Central Connecticut State, 42-6. Alongside breaking the school record in overall yards, the team broke last season's records in total rushing and overall yards.
“We’ve been waiting for this night as a team,” head coach Mike Neu said. “Our players have been chomping at the bit since last season and we’ve been putting in the hard work since January.
"I’m so happy for our players and our locker room to just stay together the way they did and to get to tonight. We made it count.”
Friday
- Women’s volleyball swept Grambling State, 3-0, in the first matchup of the Mary Jo Wynn invite in Missouri. Senior Megan Starling finished on the night with her fifth career double-digit kill game.
“The girls were extremely aggressive tonight,” Head coach Kelli Miller said. “They executed at their normal pace and they didn’t try to do too much. They were up on time and its evident in the numbers that they worked very hard tonight.”
- Ball State soccer was in South Carolina to take on College of Charleston. The Cardinals dominated Cougars, 3-0. Junior Sam Kambol recorded a goal and an assist on the night.
- Cross country headed down to Indianapolis kicking off the season at the Butler Twilight meet for the fourth straight year. The Cardinals finished in third place out of seven competing teams. Sophomore Cayla Eckenroth led the charge finishing in eighth place.
Saturday
- Women’s volleyball wrapped up the weekend in Missouri taking on Oral Roberts and host, Missouri State. The Cardinals would spilt on the day defeating Oral Roberts, 3-1, and falling to Missouri State, 1-3. Cardinals improve to 4-2 on the season.
“I felt as though we learned a lot from this weekend,” Head coach Kelli Miller said. “That’s the main goal in the non-conference matches is to learn. I think match three taught us a lot in itself.”
- Looking to picking up their first win of the season, field hockey took on Dartmouth. While the Cardinals did find the back of the net for the first time this season, they would fall to the Big Green, 5-1.
“We always have to address the negatives, the challenges and things that just aren’t good enough," Head coach Stephanie Bernathal said. "There are things we tried to implement that just didn’t click for us.”
Sunday
- Wrapping up their time in South Carolina, soccer finished the weekend taking on Charleston Southern. Due to lightning, the game was canceled with the Cardinals up on the Buccaneers, 2-0. Seniors Lauren Roll and Emily Scott scored for the Cardinals.
“One of the things we wanted the girls to do from Friday was be consistent,” Head coach Craig Roberts said. “We got on the board three times and that was great to see. So the challenge was to see if we could be consistent and we were.”
- Finishing up their weekend in Iowa, field hockey took on host, Iowa. The Cardinals would fall to the Hawkeyes, 7-1. The Cardinals still remain winless on the season.
