In its first of two games this weekend, Ball State Field Hockey (0-5, 0-0 MAC) picked up its fifth straight loss of the season falling to Ohio State (3-2, 0-0 Big 10), 6-0.
The Cardinals had a strong defensive showing in the first half. The Buckeyes had only seven shot attempts and five corner shots. The offensive game of the Cardinals did not match with their defense and had one shot attempt on the day.
“I think we played a really strong first half," Head coach Stephanie Bernthal said. "We implemented some good things tactically to put the opponent on their heels.”
However, the second half was controlled entirely by the Buckeyes exploding with 16 shots in the second half. Nikki Trzaska and Esther Clotet began the offensive surge for the Buckeyes. With 23 minutes left in the game, Whitney Harris added to Ohio State lead making it 3-0. Casey Cole and Sina Schwinn contributed with goals of their own. Cole earned her second and final goal of the game with 13 minutes left in the game.
Redshirt junior Michelle Shampton had the lone shot attempt in the game for the Cardinals in the second half. Sophomore goaltender Grace Chavez made 10 saves in 70 minutes of play.
“Ohio State did a really good job to get some momentum going in the second half and just capitalize on some lapses from our end,” Bernthal said. “We had some really good positives from the first half, some exciting things. We gotta get a more threatening offensive game put together."
Still searching for its first win of the season, the Cardinals will take on Lehigh on Saturday. The Cardinals defeated the Mountain Hawks, 2-1, last season. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 7-3 loss to Villanova on Sunday. Like the Cardinals, the Mountain Hawks are still looking for their first win of the season.
The matchup between the Cardinals and the Mountain Hawks is scheduled for Saturday at 12 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio.
