Kim leads Cardinals to Cardinal Classic runner-up finish

The Ball State Women's Golf team hosted the Cardinal Classic tournament Sept. 16-18, 2018, at the Player's Club in Yorktown, Indiana. After completing 36 holes, the Cardinals held second place, finishing the day with a score of 594 (18-over-par). The tournament between the 17 colleges concludes Tuesday afternoon.

Ball State Women’s Golf finished runner-up at its only home match of the season.

Sophomore Liz Kim led the Cardinals to their second place finish at the Player’s Club, the Cardinals’ home course. She was able to tie for sixth place overall. Also putting together a career performance was freshman Morgan Lewis who ended the tournament 7-over-par. This tied her for eighth place overall.

“[This weekend] went pretty well,” said Kim. “Things started to come together for me...and I was really confident in my wedges.”

The Cardinals (+21) sat in second place after the first two rounds of play on Monday. After round one, the Cardinals had a score of 293, their lowest score in five years. This was followed by a 301 in the afternoon.

Leading the Cardinals after 36 holes were Kim (+2), junior Manon Tounalom (+3), freshman Morgan Lewis (+4), freshman Hadley Moritz (+13), sophomore Emily Knouff (+13) and freshman Elizabeth Amendola (+28). Also competing as individuals were freshman Dylann Armstrong (+16) and freshman Ja Santadusit (+21).

“It was a very successful Cardinal Classic,” said head coach Katherine Mowat. “To shoot the 293 in the morning...I am really proud of them as competitors.”

Dominating the field of play after day one was UIndy (-2). Following behind was Ball State (+21), Bradley (+25), and Bowling Green State (+27).

The Cardinals were able to stay in second place after all 54 holes were completed. Kim (+6) and Lewis (+7) pulled together their best rounds of the season to seize the runner-up position.

“Morgan is interesting in that she struggled in qualifying, and she turns into a different player with real competition,” said Mowat.

Other final scores for the Cardinals were Tounalom (+8), Moritz (+20), Knouff (+21) and Amendola (+43). Competing as individuals were Armstrong (+21) and Santadusit (+32).

The Cardinals will travel to the Diane Thomason Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa, Sept 28-29.
