Newell Brands, the company that produces Ball jars, decided to close its Muncie manufacturing plant beginning next summer.
Ball Jars were first manufactured in Muncie after the first strike of gas in Eaton. The Ball brothers heard about the gas boom in Delaware County and decided to expand their business in Muncie.
The company started as seven acres and 100 employees quickly grew to 70 acres and thousands of employees, even when gas gave out in Muncie. The factory made the brothers millionaires and quickly became a Muncie staple.
Now, the parts manufactured during the assembly of mason jars will be outsourced to a facility in Columbus, Ohio, while packaging and distribution will be done at a facility in Fishers.
