Matt Walsh put together a pair of steadfast performances for No. 11 Ball State in a pair of wins against No. 15 Fort Wayne last week, and the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association took notice.
Tuesday, Walsh was announced as the MIVA Defensive Player of the Week. To complement that honor, the Chicago native’s pair of staunch performances led to him being named a nominee for HERO of the Week. Fan voting for HERO of the Week is open until Friday at 10 a.m.
Walsh tallied 15 blocks for a healthy 1.88 blocks per set. Offensively, Walsh totaled 18 kills and a .444 hitting percentage.
The senior middle attacker’s consistent efforts led to a 3-2 Ball State win on the road at Fort Wayne and a 3-0 sweep at home in the rematch.
Walsh sits sixth in the nation with 1.19 blocks per set, which also leads the MIVA. The 6-foot-11 senior’s .396 hitting percentage places him 10th nationally and fifth in the conference.
Blocks have consistently come for the Cardinals with Walsh on the roster. He is currently second in Ball State history during the rally scoring era in total career blocks.
Ball State will hit the road this weekend for its last pair of conference matches as the team will take on No. 6 Loyola-Chicago and No. 10 Lewis.
The match against Loyola is scheduled for 9 p.m. and the match at Lewis is slated for 8 p.m.
