Indiana unemployment rate continues to be lower than national rate

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development said in a press release that the unemployment rate in Indiana dropped 3.3 percent in January, which is lower than the United States average of 4.1 percent.

The department said the state’s unemployment rate has been below the national rate for over four years.

Private sector employment has increased by 3,000 over the previous month and more than 24,400 over the past year. The release said this increase is mostly due to the increase in construction and leisure and hospitality employment within the state.

Throughout January, Indiana’s labor force saw a net decrease of 7,294 which was largely a result of 4,105 unemployed residents no longer seeking employment.

The labor force in Indiana totals 3.31 million residents, which makes the state’s 63.7 labor force participation rate top the national rate of 62.7 percent.

According to Hoosiers by the Numbers, the unemployment rate is based mainly on a monthly survey of about 60,000 households in the country in which respondents are placed in three different categories: employed, unemployed or not in the labor force.
