by Baylie Clevenger Out of all of the weird corners of the internet, one I have found myself hopelessly engulfed in is conspiracy theories. Over the last few years, conspiracy theories have gained popularity. Youtubers like Shane Dawson make videos about them. He has more than 12 million subscribers on Youtube and his conspiracy videos are some of his most popular. That is where I got started with them. The community of internet conspiracy theorists look into many different topics and ideas. Some of my favorites include the idea that the moon landing was faked, the idea that the Titanic never really sank and the idea that Hitler did not actually die in 1945. Some others are a little more outlandish and include ideas like Mattress Firm being a money laundering business and Justin Bieber secretly being a giant shape shifting lizard. I think that the more outlandish ones are pretty entertaining and fun to look into. For example, the most recent one I have found myself obsessed with is the idea that Sam Smith and Adele are the same person. Now: before you dismiss this as ridiculous, hear me out. While I do not have a solid stance on this theory yet, there is some suspicious evidence. The most provoking evidence is this video that lowers the pitch of an Adele song and then raises the pitch of a Sam Smith song. When the voice in the Adele song is lowered, it sounds just like Sam Smith. Then, when the pitch of the Sam Smith song is raised, it sounds just like Adele. https://twitter.com/aretheyIoyals/status/966404172433178624 While this could just be coincidental and they could just have very similar voices, it is definitely suspicious and a little too convenient. The next piece of possible evidence is something I actually created myself. I took a photo of Sam Smith and Adele and put one on top of the other. I adjusted the transparency of the top photo so that it would be possible to see the similarities between their faces. Once the transparency was adjusted, the similarities were eerie. Once again, this seems a little too convenient but it could still just be a coincidence. Finally, upon scouring the internet for evidence: I have found no photos of Sam Smith and Adele in the same place at the same time. Having no photographic evidence that they have been at the same place at the same time is compelling. Think about the similarities between the two: they are both British, they both have awards and they both have the same style of music. It only seems logical that they would have been at the same award show together at some point or at least been in the same place at the same time at least once. While the evidence could merely be coincidence, it is all very suspicious. I do not believe one way or the other but I cannot deny the evidence. While this is a fairly new theory, being only about a month old, it has picked up steam pretty quick. One Clevver News video about it has more than 200,000 views in the short month that this has been a prevalent theory. The video that I previously mentioned where they adjusted the tone of their voices also has almost 400,000 views. It is interesting how just a little bit of evidence that could be purely coincidental could turn into a full blown theory. A lot of them are definitely reaching a bit. Ultimately though, they are harmless and usually pretty fun.
