A resolution to create a Green Council for student organizations, authored by Student Government Association senator Kaleb Chowning, appeared before student senate Wednesday.
The Green Council would aim to improve campus sustainability by bringing student organizations and Ball State’s Council on the Environment (COTE) together, Chowning said.
The council would help make Ball State stand out as a university, he said, as it would help progress its sustainability goals.
The resolution will appear before senate again before being voted on.
In addition to the Green Council senate approved two budgets for upcoming events.
Dining in the Dark
SGA partnered with Ball State Dining Services for Dinner in the Dark from 5-8 p.m. Feb. 15 in Noyer and LaFollette Complexes, Chowning said.
Dining in the Dark promotes sustainability by providing information on how students can be more environmentally friendly. As a part of this theme, students eat dinner with only a few lights on.
Chowning said he plans to use this event to tell students about SGA’s initiatives for a campus garden, Green Council and environment-friendly straws.
“Last year over 500 students participated,” Chowning said. “The event brings awareness to sustainability and environmental issues. So, we should help contribute to that cause.”
Additionally, SGA will have an information table and prizes at the event. Senate voted to use $600 from the student senate discretionary fund for the prizes.
Roommate Speed Dating
SGA will host Roommate Speed Dating from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Student Center, said senator Kirk Malone.
For both on-campus and off-campus students, the event will help find potential roommates for next semester.
“I know a lot of people who need a roommate but are having trouble finding people from the Ball State area,” Kirk said. “This will provide icebreakers for students.”
Senate voted to use approximately $65 from student senate discretionary fund for the event.
