Sunday carryout sales might be sooner than July 1

Buying alcohol on Sundays may be closer than you think.

Senate Bill 1 (SB01), which would allow Sunday sales, will be signed at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday by Gov. Eric Holcomb.

The bill passed through the Indiana House of Representatives (82-10) on Feb. 20. However, instead of going into effect July 1, like a majority of bills passed by the Indiana General Assembly, it would go into effect immediately.

After its passed, SB01 would allow liquor stores, drug stores, grocery stores and convenience stores to sell alcohol from noon to 8 p.m. Sundays. A measure to extend those hours failed in both the House and the Senate earlier this year.

When its signed, Hoosiers might be able to buy alcohol as early as March 4 — almost four months sooner than the original date.
