During campus council Thursday, student leaders and administration approved edits made to the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities.
The code includes the student bill of rights, student code of conduct and the student academic ethics policy.
Proposed changes will advance to the senate agenda committee Monday to be placed on the governance system agenda and further approved.
Mike Gillilan, Ball State's director of student rights and community standards, said many of the changes were made to update the code to what different offices' operating functions are right now, and also to use gender-neutral language.
“We have done our best," Gillilan said. "We're not going to say it's perfect.”
The following changes were made:
Additions
- Under Authority, a sentence was added that reads: “University officials may also pause proceedings at the request of law enforcement agencies so as not to interfere with criminal investigations.”
- Under Offenses Against Property in the Code of Conduct section, specific language banning skateboards, bicycles or “hoverboards” inside of buildings was added.
- Under the Interim Suspension section of the Office of Student Rights and Community Standards Disciplinary Procedures, university suspension now extends to online classes and classroom resources.
- Under Sanctions, added language states “other university offices and programs may consider/ conduct probation and restrict/deny participation of students including but not limited to participation in athletics, service as student organization leader, international study abroad or other off-site programs.”
- Under records of Academic Misconduct, added that “a minimal record of the case, including nature of accusation, date/time of hearing, accused student’s name, and the resolution will be retained for future reference as needed.”
Edits
- Under student’s relation to civil law, “encouraged to follow these standards” is now “expected to support and follow these standards”
- Under student’s relation to the university, changed “willing to identify themselves” to a requirement for students to identify themselves “when requested by persons identifying themselves as university officials.”
- If a student has a concern in the classroom, the step of consulting with the Associate Dean of Students is taken out. Instead, they should first meet with a faculty member or an instructor.
- Changed Disciplinary Procedures to Conduct Procedures
- Sexual Harassment policy has been changed to Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Policy
